Fresolo's Fire

Worcester Magazine (May 4, 2006)

Last week, Worcesteria ran an item highlighting the late-date paper-pulling of Melissa Murgo for a possible primary race against her former boss, incumbent state Rep. John Fresolo. We asked why Murgo had decided so late in the game that Fresolo would be vulnerable to a challenge. On Sunday, the Telegram and Gazette ran a Dianne Williamson column that offered a possible answer, discussing recent DSS-substantiated complaints that Fresolo had physically abused his daughter. Murgo officially announced on Monday, and Fresolo came out swinging, accusing her of exploiting his personal problems. Meanwhile, several political observers reserved some criticism for Williamson, who they charge “outed” Fresolo’s daughter. As to the reaction she received, Williamson says, “I got one negative response from a coach at [the daughter’s] high school saying, yeah, I was identifying the daughter, but mostly, people are expressing concern about Mr. Fresolo — given his history.” What critics may be omitting is that Williamson did not print the girl’s name. Adding that “it’s unfortunate,” Williamson says, “Our policy is not to identify juveniles, but sometimes it’s impossible to hide the connection. In this case, we had a high-profile state rep. involved in a child-abuse case.”
